Haunting passages and eerie sounds seem to spring straight out of a horror movie
Just in time for Halloween, Jon O’Bergh’s new album “Ghost Story” seems to spring straight out of a horror movie. Haunting piano passages, strange sounds, and diabolical rhythms create an unsettling mood. The cover shows an illuminated glass skull in a wooden box.
The music draws on styles from electronic collage to solo piano to symphonic to evoke the ghostly as well as the macabre, inspired by films and series such as American Horror Story, Carrie, Saw, Onibaba, The Devil’s Backbone, and The Others. “Devil’s Cornfield” features a demonic drone and sinister noises, while a melancholy tune meanders in “Spectral Frequencies (Revisited).” “Head in a Box” begins with spooky calmness then builds to a potent, dissonant climax.
A propulsive rhythm and haunting melody drive “Restless Ghosts.” Abstract electronic noises and plaintive voices conjure the 1890 American plains in “Second Ghost Dance.” A hiphop beat and moaning strings create a seductive groove for “Succubus.” The thirteen tracks include other titles such as “Witch’s Curse,” “Catacombs / Appian Way,” and “Apocalypse 2.0.”
“I’m a huge fan of horror movies and ghost stories,” says O’Bergh, whose albums range from electronic dance to jazz to world beat. “I’ve written eerie songs for some of my past albums, but this time I wanted all of the music to focus specifically on horror.”
“Ghost Story” is perfect not just for Halloween but for any time you’re in the mood for a fright. The album will be available October 1 at iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, as well as through most streaming services.
