Women in Horror Month Interview with Author Ellie Douglas

As you may know, February is “Women in Horror” month. To celebrate, PromoteHorror.com asked women from different professions if they would like to answer some questions about being a “Woman in Horror.” One of the women, who was kind enough to answer our questions, was author Ellie Douglas. Lets see what she said about being a “Woman in Horror”…

-PH: When did you first become a horror fan?

-Ellie: When I was in my mother’s womb. Well okay perhaps not that early, but it was when I was very young 🙂

-PH: Was there a specific moment when you realized that you wanted to go from being a fan of horror to a woman who contributes to the genre, or did it just kind of happen naturally?

-Ellie: I think personally for me it just happened. I had been exposed to horror as a young child, getting to watch horror movies on T.V and they scared me back then *I am talking of the very tender young age of 5 and 6* but after a while they become not so scary and I sat there around the age of 8 thinking, I could write something scarier than that of what I was watching and it just grew from that.

-PH: What does having a “Women in Horror” month mean to you?

-Ellie: For me it represents that woman are not always the scaredy cats that we have been stereotyped into being. We are strong, gutsy, and can write gruesome, scary horror without blinking. It is a great way for woman to be recognized as horror authors.

-PH: Is there a woman in horror who you consider a role model?

-Ellie: Daphne Du Maurier she had three of her books turned into movies produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, for example the movie Birds was written by Daphne and was one of my favorite books and movies.

-PH: How do you think the role of women in horror has changed over the years?

-Ellie: I think it has become stronger and more acceptable to have a woman writing horror.

-PH: What do you think the future holds for women in horror?

-Ellie: I think the future for woman horror writers is going to grow, to expand and we will be seeing a lot more of woman horror writers.

-PH: Being that this is PromoteHorror.com, please feel free to plug your current/next horror project.
