Women in Horror Month Interview with Author BellaDonna Drakul

As you may know, February is “Women in Horror” month. To celebrate, PromoteHorror.com asked women from different professions if they would like to answer some questions about being a “Woman in Horror.” One of the women, who was kind enough to answer our questions, was author BellaDonna Drakul. Lets see what she said about being a “Woman in Horror”…

-PH: When did you first become a horror fan?

-BellaDonna: I first became a horror fan when I saw a group of bloodsucking vampires in “The Lost Boys”. I was immediately drawn to the villains, the spine-tingling screams, and the sheer excitement of everything gruesome. My instant addiction spilled over into other vampire films, classic monster cinema, and eventually slasher movies that turned me into a true horror freak.

-PH: Was there a specific moment when you realized that you wanted to go from being a fan of horror to a woman who contributes to the genre, or did it just kind of happen naturally?

-BellaDonna: I have always loved horror, but I think I became fully enthralled with everything frightening when I began writing my own tales at seven years old. The stories out there were great, but I felt the need to write something from my own perspective and wanted to be part of the horror culture as more than a fan.

-PH: What does having a “Women in Horror” month mean to you?

-BellaDonna: It means the world to me that women in horror are being celebrated and continue to rise with such brilliance. I tend to write about strong, female characters who never play the damsel but rather the beautiful monster hiding under the bed. The women in the horror community are quite inspiring and I feel they have given me the backbone to write such fantastic characters. I am beyond thrilled and honored to be celebrating “Women In Horror” with all of my creepy ladies.

-PH: Is there a woman in horror who you consider a role model?

-BellaDonna: They are many women who have inspired me that I can’t name just one but several. I adore the minds of The Soska Sisters, the craziness of Fairuza Balk, and the disturbed innocence of a youthful Wednesday Addams/Christina Ricci. The greats are on my list like Jamie Lee Curtis, Jennifer Tilly, and Adrienne Barbeau as well as the newer ladies. But as far as only one woman who inspires me, there are too many greats to pick my favorite.

-PH: How do you think the role of women in horror has changed over the years?

-BellaDonna: The roles of women in horror have changed dramatically and I couldn’t be happier. Women have gone from sad damsels to insane killers without a single hair out of place. We are no longer the victim and I love that we are stronger than we were in the past. I believe women are making quite a staple in the community and they’re only going to get better.

-PH: What do you think the future holds for women in horror?

-BellaDonna: I think the future for women in horror is going to be groundbreaking. Ladies are directing bloodier, depraved films and I think their minds are only going to get crazier. I look forward to upcoming projects from my fellow horror ladies and again I am honored to stand with them.

-Being that this is PromoteHorror.com, please feel free to plug your current/next horror project.
