This June, FilmRise answers all your summer entertainment questions with an eclectic mix of new releases from around the world. Leading the way are four exceptional documentaries starting with
I Called Him Morgan which The New York Times calls “One of the best movies of the year” and The Los Angeles Times describes as “Artistic, Obsessive and Intoxicating.” On a snowy night in February 1972, the 33 year old jazz trumpet star Lee Morgan was shot dead by his common-law wife, Helen, during a gig at a club in New York City. Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin takes an unconventional look at this shocking murder that sent shock waves through the jazz community.

The next documentary on tap is Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four. This gripping feature from award-winning director Deborah S. Esquenazi follows the struggle for exonerations of four Latina lesbians who were wrongfully convicted of gang rape against two young girls. Southwest of Salem was honored with a number of awards including Outstanding Documentary from the GLAAD Media Awards and Best First Documentary from the Critics Choice Awards.

FilmRise’s third documentary for June is Motherland. This 2018 Film Independent Spirit Award best documentary nominee takes the viewer into the heart of the world’s busiest maternity ward located inside Manila’s Fabella Hospital, where an average of 60 babies are born daily. Praised for its non-intrusive nature, Motherland is a heartwarming look at a rather difficult situation.

Rounding out the documentary lineup is The Good Postman. Ivan, a postman in a small Bulgarian village, decides to run for mayor in an effort to save his village by welcoming in refugees. On his delivery route turned campaign trail, Ivan discovers that his good intentions may not be enough. “Pulses with wider-world resonance.” – Variety.

June’s first fiction release, 2017 Tribeca Film Festival Jury Award winner Ice Mother, is a romantic drama from the Czech Republic. Hana lives alone in her family villa trying to get over the death of her husband. Her kids visit often, but the would-be joyous occasions often end in fights. Soon Hana meets Brona, a winter swimmer, who quickly opens her world as the two grow closer.

From romantic drama to fantasy drama FilmRise presents Tormentero. This magical tale from Mexico is the story of Romero, a man that discovered an oil field in his village that caused his friends and neighbors to lose their way of life and reject him. Years later, Romero is now a retired drunk but he has plans to reclaim the love and honor he previously lost.

FilmRise brings to the month to close with two thrillers – Inflame and Body of Deceit. In the former, a news channel employee is struggling with a recurring nightmares about the death of her parents. Her nightmares creep into her reality and she questions whether or not her parents were truly killed in a car crash or died in some other horrific way? In the latter, a ghostwriter suffers significant memory loss from an accident in Mala. Years later and now suffering from writer’s block, she heads back to the island to get back on track but encounters a shady stranger and a gripping mystery ensues.
