Women in Horror Month Interview with Author/Blogger Amy Koto

As you may know, February is “Women in Horror” month. To celebrate, PromoteHorror.com asked women from different professions if they would like to answer some questions about being a “Woman in Horror,” and more. One of those women, who was kind enough to answer our questions, was author and blogger Amy Koto. Lets see what she said about being a “Woman in Horror”…

-PH: When did you first become a horror fan?

-Amy: Halloween has always been my absolute favorite holiday ever since I was younger. I go all out decorating and I try to make my house as creepy and spooky as possible. My love for Halloween quickly became an obsession of mine and I then became a horror fan before I knew it. My favorite show growing up was Buffy the Vampire Slayer and my favorite horror movie is Scream.

-PH: Was there a specific moment when you realized that you wanted to go from being a fan of horror to a woman who contributes to the genre, or did it just kind of happen naturally?

-Amy: I guess it sort of happened naturally. I have always been a fan of the genre and I love discussing horror films and television shows with everyone. My friends and family used to joke that it was like a full time job for me and then it sort of became one, as I started to devote my time and writing to horror. When you enjoy something so much, you want to share it with others and contribute as much as you can, inspiring other fans to do the same.

-PH: What does having a “Women in Horror” month mean to you?

-Amy: I am all about female empowerment and Women in Horror are so talented, strong, fearless, and resilient. It’s so important to recognize these amazing women who absolutely deserve to be in the spotlight. These women inspire me on a daily basis.

-PH: Is there a woman in horror who you consider a role model?

-Amy: Sarah Michelle Gellar without a doubt. Growing up, I learned so much from her in her role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She taught me a lot about myself and reminded me that it’s OK to be different. She reminded me about being there for the ones you love and that true strength comes from within. It wasn’t just about the monsters she faced, it was how she handled the unavoidable parts of life that we never see coming and can’t always be ready for. But she helped me understand that it’s what we do next that counts and I am forever grateful to her for shaping me into who I am today.

-PH: How do you think the role of women in horror has changed over the years?

-Amy: I think that the role of women in horror has truly transformed so much over the years. The “Scream Queen” title is no longer just a title. It has true meaning now, as these women are ready to fight their demons and stand up for themselves and others. The villains in these films should be scared because these women are beyond tough and I would personally not want to mess with them.

-PH: What do you think the future holds for women in horror?

-Amy: I think that the future is bright for women in horror. These women will continue to inspire us and I can only hope that more and more people continue to celebrate and participate in this genre because it is only getting stronger.

-PH: If you could serve a role in horror that you’ve never done, what would it be?

-Amy: I would love to be a part of a special effects makeup team. I think the work they do is absolutely incredible and so creative!

-PH: Who is your favorite final girl, and favorite female villain?

-Amy: My favorite final girl is Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott in Scream and my favorite female villain is Juliet Landau as Drusilla in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

-PH: Being that this is PromoteHorror.com, please feel free to plug your current/next horror project.
