Women in Horror Month Interview with Filmmaker Lisa Sorrentino

As you may know, February is “Women in Horror” month. To celebrate, PromoteHorror.com asked women from different professions if they would like to answer some questions about being a “Woman in Horror,” and more. One of those women, who was kind enough to answer our questions, was filmmaker Lisa Sorrentino. Lets see what she said about being a “Woman in Horror”…

-PH: When did you first become a horror fan?

-Lisa: I have to chuckle to myself at this question. 5 years ago if you would have asked anyone who knows me would I ever be considered a woman in horror, yet alone being interviewed for WIHM, the answer would have been a resounding ‘Hell No’!!

I have selectively watched Horror movies all my life but if I am being honest it wasn’t until about four years ago that I became a true fan of the genre….(GASP!)

I was always terrified to watch some of the more gruesome movies until we started producing films. I think this gave me an understanding and a true appreciation of how they were created. Now I am enjoying catching up on a lifetime of horror films I missed out on!

-PH: Was there a specific moment when you realized that you wanted to go from being a fan of horror to a woman who contributes to the genre, or did it just kind of happen naturally?

-Lisa: It was definitely a natural progression. We started My Little Rascal Production Company four years ago to produce my husband Joey’s screenplays. We knew very little about filmmaking at the time. Every aspect of this business just made me driven to learn more. When we produced our first horror short, I became fascinated by our special effects makeup artist. Watching her create inspired me! I began watching YouTube videos, practicing on myself and any willing family members and I found I have a talent for this. I took on this role for the first time for our latest horror short House Call. It’s also quite the rush for me when we are trying to figure out the practical effects for scenes and that ‘light bulb’ goes off in my head!

It’s the greatest feeling taking words from paper and creating these short films. We are truly living our dream!

-PH: What does having a “Women in Horror” month mean to you?

-Lisa: It truly means a lot. There are so many passionate women who deserve the recognition. I especially admire the women working their ‘day jobs’, some also taking care of their families who then devote all of their waking moments to this genre because it is their passion in life. They are the true warriors.

-PH: Is there a woman in horror who you consider a role model?

-Lisa: It’s the everyday Women in horror like Melissa Marie (Special Effects Makeup Artist) and TraCee (@TraCee_tr) who inspire me.
The talented women who work relentlessly all for the love of horror!
Women like them inspire me to be better and do better everyday.

-PH: How do you think the role of women in horror has changed over the years?

-Lisa: I think one of the biggest changes is the vast world of social media and all the outlets now available to us. Women in Horror are making their own opportunities. Whether it’s Indie Film, podcasts, bloggers, radio, authors….. Women in horror are making themselves known.

-PH: What do you think the future holds for women in horror?

-Lisa: Until I joined Twitter, I hadn’t realized how many women like me have dedicated themselves in some aspect to horror. We are everywhere and I think the future is unlimited in what we can achieve.

-PH: If you could serve a role in horror that you’ve never done, what would it be?

-Lisa: Since I just discovered my passion for Special Effects Makeup, I just want to continue learning and be the best I can be! Plus I love every production stage of making a film so I am content with what I am doing!

-PH: Who is your favorite final girl, and favorite female villain?

-Lisa: Favorite Final Girl: Heather Langenkamp from Nightmare on Elm Street. Favorite Female Villain: Kathy Bates from Misery.

-PH: Being that this is PromoteHorror, please feel free to plug your current/next horror project.

-Lisa: I would like to thank @promotehorror for inviting me to participate! It’s especially exciting since this is my first interview!
