For those of you who like holiday horror we have a treat for you. We got a chance to talk with author David Vorhees, who has a new book out now that’s full of amazing holiday horror. Check out what he had to say about the stories, the wonderful reviews it has been getting, and more…
-PH: So lets jump right into it. What’s ‘The Feast’ about?
-David: The Feast is a collection of short horror stories, each story is based on a different holiday throughout the calendar year.
-PH: Why did you decide to go with holiday horror?
-David: Honestly, I was reading an article on the Fansided website about a Thanksgiving Day horror movie. Something about a turkey that starts killing people and the author asked if you could write a horror story for thanksgiving what would it be. So, I replied with what would later become The Feast, the Thanksgiving day story. Someone replied and thought that a great idea. A few years later after telling a co-worker the idea he said that i need to write that down. So I did but it wasn’t very long so I decided why not do a collection involving all the major holidays.
-PH: Did you get all the holidays in there?
-David: All the major ones: New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
-PH: What kind of horror are these stories? Are they ghost stories, slashers, mystery, or a combination of different things?
-David: Each one is unique and tailored for that holiday. There is 1 supernatural, a mystery, but all are different.
-PH: What was your favorite story to write?
-David: The Feast, because it was the first and had been in my head so long it felt good to get it out finally.
-PH: Which one do you think is the scariest one?
-David: To me the scariest one is Christmas because we don’t know who this man is. We know he has killed but he never gives names so we don’t know who he is or where he is. He could be anybody, he could be the guy next to you in a theatre, or at a bus stop. You just never know.
-PH: The book has been getting some great reviews. How does it feel to have your book so well received?
-David: It’s amazing. I was always worried that people would hate the book and tell me how horrible of a writer I am, but to see how many people truly like, and some even love, this book, tells me this is what I should be doing. It has given me the confidence to write more.
-PH: This was your first book. Why did you decide to give writing a try?
-David: I always wanted to write but I never felt that I had the ability until I got a job as a small town reporter and even though that didn’t work out it actually gave me the confidence to give it a shot.
-PH: Why horror? What is it about horror that you love?
-David: I have been fascinated with horror since I was a kid. Me and my mom use to stay up late watching old horror movies together. I read my first Stephen King book when I was 8, found Edgar Allen Poe a few years later. Horror makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, or scares you to death and yet when the book or movie ends you never feel more alive. Horror connects us as we all have had a moment where we were scared to death, so to me it’s a way to connect to people and to connect people to each other.
-PH: Being a Navy Veteran, thank you for your service, did that help with writing any of the stories? Do you think you’ll use that background for future stories?
-David: Thank you. The Navy did a lot for me. It helped me grow up, but not too much, but it showed me how big the world really is and taught me respect for other people and cultures. It gave a kid who was always afraid to try new things the courage to try new things, to have experiences and adventures. Will there be a Navy story in the future, let’s just say I have a few ideas.
-PH: Here’s your chance to promote anything we haven’t talk about. Let us know something more about your book, future projects, life outside writing, or anything else you would like to mention.
-David: Well I’m writing a new book, it’s a haunted house story. Hopefully that will be done in a few months. I would like to advocate for Autism Awarwness. I have an 8 year old son on the spectrum and I just want people to learn about it so if they come accross an autistic child they show understanding.
