Focus on Fantasia 2020: FRIED BARRY

Our ‘Focus on Fantasia 2020’ series takes a look at some of the terrific horror films coming to this years Fantasia International Film Festival. Today we focus on one of the festival’s On Demand titles, “Fried Barry.”

“A first in the history of South African cinema, Fried Barry is a bizarre tale told in a genre-bending onslaught of sex, drugs, and violence. A spectacle that pulls you in and won’t let go as every expectation is subverted in this boundary-pushing tale of alien abduction.”

Barry is a drug-addled, abusive bastard who – after yet another bender – is abducted by aliens. Barry takes a backseat as an alien visitor assumes control of his body and takes it for a joyride through Cape Town, South Africa. What follows is an onslaught of drugs, sex and violence as our alien tourist enters the weird and wonderful world of humankind.

Starring: Gary Green, Chanelle de Jager, Bia Hartenstein, Sean Cameron Michael, and Johnny Pienaar

Written and directed by: Ryan Kruger

Origins – Fried Barry Short Film

The story of Fried Barry began with the 3-minute experimental short film of the same name, shot in 2016. The concept was simple: a strung-out heroin addict tweaking out in a warehouse after his latest hit.

The short is injected with a harsh energy that surrounds the main character, Barry. His intense performance is heightened with flourishes of severe sound design and snappy editing. The short is reminiscent of Chris Cunningham and grabs the audience’s attention and doesn’t let go until the bitter end.

The short was a success: the simple concept and stylized execution earned the film 59 official selections and 13 awards at film festivals across the world.

FRIED BARRY will be shown at the 2020 Fantasia International Film Festival as one of its’ ON DEMAND titles.
