Anomaly – The Rochester Genre Film Festival is thrilled to present its 2020 Virtual Edition on Thursday, November 12 through Sunday, November 15. The lineup includes 14 feature films and 35 short films, spanning 15 countries, along with virtual events and filmmaker Q&As.
Highlights include Opening Night Selection THE PAPER TIGERS, a feel-good action-comedy about three former Kung Fu prodigies, now washed-up underdogs about to face epic unfinished business; THE LAST BLOCKBUSTER, a wry and nostalgic documentary showcasing the ups and downs of video store culture, as well as the challenges faced by the last remaining Blockbuster store in Bend, Oregon; and JUMBO, a sweet, strange, and heartfelt romance starring Noémie Merlant (PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE) that’s unlike any you’ve seen before.
Other highlights include the festival premieres of hand-drawn animated fantasy EMPRESS OF DARKNESS from Japan, and GREMLINS: THE PUPPET STORY, an intimate documentary made by legendary special effects artist Chris Walas about the creation of the creature effects for the beloved 1984 classic film GREMLINS. A Q&A with Walas and Western NY-based artist and filmmaker Rashaad Santiago, winner of the 6th season of SyFy’s special effects makeup reality competition FACE OFF will follow the film.
All features are accessible to view online throughout New York State; shorts are accessible online nationwide. All films and programs are $10 each, while virtual events and Q&As are free. A free account is required via the festival’s virtual platform and sponsor, Eventive.
