Popcorn Frights Film Festival: Film Lineup for August 14-15

Popcorn Frights Film Festival presents the very best genre films from across the world as it celebrates the art of horror. Featuring over 40 film premieres from 8 countries, special guests, and live DJ sets inspired by iconic horror film music, this year’s Popcorn Frights promises more thrills than ever before as it rages through Miami from August 11-17.

August 14:

The night starts off with the feature film “Lake Bodom” preceded by the short film “Couples Night” at 7pm.

FLORIDA PREMIERE! A smart, slick, savage slasher in the gushing vein of Scream and Cabin in the Woods, Lake Bodom riffs on a notorious real-life Finnish murder still unsolved almost six decades later. Every camper’s worst nightmare came true at Lake Bodom in 1960 when four teenagers were stabbed to death while sleeping in their tent. The unsolved mystery turned into an urban legend, a creepy campfire story passed from generation to generation. Now, a group of teenagers arrives at the same campsite, hoping to solve the murder by reconstructing it minute by minute. As night falls, turns out not all of them are there to play. Tonight…it’s girls against boys. Let the killing games begin!

FLORIDA PREMIERE! A couple’s night goes off the rails when one couple reveals they’re blood sacrificing devil worshippers. And then things get weird…

Next up is the feature film “Super Dark Times” preceded by the short film “Neck and Neck” at 9pm.

FLORIDA PREMIERE! An incinerating and strangely dream-like teenage nightmare with shades of everything from Donnie Darko, Stand By Me, and Stranger Things. Set in the leafy American suburbs of the early 1990s – a time before the internet, cellphones, and social media – a group of best friends live in the mundane world of bike rides, after school snacks, and video games. But in an instant, everything changes. An innocent lark in the park takes an abrupt and violent turn when an accident results in a gruesome death. With vivid imagination and surreal imagery, we see the darkening of innocence and adolescence as a once simple world turns into a twilight zone of nightmares and brutality.

FLORIDA PREMIERE! Inspired by Shakespeare’s Othello, this animated short presents a dark surreal take on the relationship between the deceived Othello, the innocent Desdemona, and the mendacious Iago.

The night ends with the feature film “Happy Hunting” preceded by the short film “2AM” at 11pm.

FLORIDA PREMIERE! A gory thrill ride that falls midway between Deliverance and Surviving the Game. An alcoholic degenerate drifter becomes stranded in a one-horse town deep in the American desert. It turns out that the town’s psychotic rednecks celebrate a gory pastime rounding up drifters and hunting them for sport. It all leads to a blood-soaked, live-or-die showdown that’s one of the meanest, most nihilistic pieces of American genre cinema.

FLORIDA PREMIERE! A man awakens in an unusual asylum when supernatural events begin to unfold right in front of OUR eyes.

August 15:

The night begins with the feature film “Sequence Break” preceded by the short film “Level” at 7pm.

FLORIDA PREMIERE! Videodrome meets Altered States in this horror romance that masterfully melds retro ‘80s horror and Lovecraftian doom. A loner video arcade technician experiences bizarre bio-mechanical mutations and Cronenbergian hallucinations when a mysterious new arcade game appears in his shop. Reality itself threatens to fracture as he works to solve its mystery and the new chaos that has entered his life. Starring Chase Williamson (SiREN, John Dies at the End) and Fabianne Therese (Southbound, Starry Eyes).

Director Graham Skipper will be in attendance to introduce the film and participate in an extended Q&A afterward.

WORLD PREMIERE! Trapped inside a never-ending nightmare, a cat and mouse game plays out between a man and a hellish beast lurking in the shadows.

FLORIDA PREMIERE! Fusing influences ranging from Brian De Palma to Gaspar Noé, Psychopaths unfolds like a fever dream. When an unidentified madman is sent to the electric chair, it triggers a sort of Mischief Night for a group of serial killers out in an entire city. An escaped mental patient, a beautiful seductress, a strangler who preys on unsuspecting women, and an enigmatic masked contract killer run amok in Mickey Keating’s new slasherfest.

Director Mickey Keating will be in attendance to introduce the film and participate in a Q&A!

FLORIDA PREMIERE! Betrayed by his clan and murdered for his past evil deeds, a sadistic killer’s soul possesses his identical twin’s body and sets out onto the road of vengeance for one final crusade of extermination. Everywhere he goes…HELL FOLLOWS.
