DARK STAR PICTURES AND RED WATER ENTERTAINMENT CO-ACQUIRE AWARD-WINNING ACTION-HORROR-MUSICAL CHAINSAWS WERE SINGING, SET RELEASE FOR FALL 2025
Dark Star Pictures and Red Water Entertainment have jointly acquired North American distribution rights to the wildly original genre mashup Chainsaws Were Singing, an over-the-top action-horror-musical-comedy from Estonia that’s been tearing through the international festival circuit. The two companies are partnering for a Fall 2025 theatrical release, followed by a digital and on-demand rollout.
A deliriously unhinged cinematic experience, Chainsaws Were Singing has been described as “Monty Python meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Les Misérables.” The story follows new lovers whose budding romance is shredded apart—literally—by a chainsaw-wielding killer, setting off an anarchic odyssey full of gore, grief, and musical numbers. Shot guerilla-style, the film is a full-throttle love letter to B-movie chaos and crowd-pleasing exploitation cinema.
The film arrives with serious festival pedigree, having won Best Horror Movie at Fantastic Fest 2024, a Special Jury Mention in the New Flesh Competition for Best First Feature at Fantasia 2024, and Best Film at Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre 2024, along with official selections at Sitges, Tallinn Black Nights, Night Visions, and many more.
“We’re always on the lookout for films that break the mold, and Chainsaws Were Singing does that with a chainsaw and a show tune,” said Avi Federgreen, President of Red Water Entertainment. “It’s rare to find something this original that also connects so instantly with audiences.”
The acquisition deal was negotiated by Michael Repsch on behalf of Red Water and Dark Star, and Justyna Koronkiewicz of Media Move, representing the filmmakers.
