A desperate man flees his home country of China, in an attempt to escape the curse of Malice, a dark malevolent and vengeful Chinese Nu Gui. Chinese folklore believes that these demonic souls only haunt males that have done them wrong in their past life. In an attempt to hunt down a former Shinto associate for help, Zheng takes refuge in the city of Brisbane, Australia. His efforts are futile as the nu gui stalks him at every moment, tormenting him, mentally destroying him for weeks until he breathes his final breath. His suicide ritual fails him and his letter becomes cursed by Malice.

A couple nights later, a young American male university student, who goes by the name of Joe, is on a date with a beautiful but quiet young woman. He tells her about a crumbled up letter he found on the street which he seems oddly attached too. His date is of Chinese origin and after inspecting the letter, She, tells him that it is written in Mandarin but withholds the contents of the letter from him. His date then vanishes while he is talking to the waiter, putting an end to the awkward occasion.

Things only get weirder for Joe, when he returns home to find his house mate, Lee, enjoying the company of Sai, the woman he just had dinner with. From this night onward, the nightmare begins. Joe isolates himself in his room for days on end and Lee becomes grossly obsessed with Sai. The psychological turmoil continues when the mysterious woman relentlessly stalks their female friend, Keo, mentally torturing her with the Khmer girls own dark past which has its own tragic connection to the Nu Gui.

Director’s Statement from Chaz Fenwick:

The inspiration behind my film.

Malice: IS I have always loved the Asian horror genre. I personally believe they are far superior movies compared to their US counterparts. Their stories are far more meaningful and detailed, they don’t just rely on cheap jump scares. The genre tends to focus more on psychological horror and building tension which is right down my alley. Psychology. what makes a person tic, why do they do the things they do? I love to get into a characters mind.

Malice, as a character. I have had in my head for quite some time. The original concept with her is that she is a woman whose psychical attractiveness is so powerful that she can make any man do whatever she wants. This brings us on to one of the film’s themes, ‘obsession’.

I am from an industry where I have watched men become completely obsessed and unstuck over highly sexual and attractive women. These men would do anything for them even at the cost of their own self-respect. It is an issue I think that has the makings of a fascinating psychological story. However. the main plot of Malice will focus on a powerful independent confident woman and/or demon with horror elements added into the mix.

There were a couple of candidates I had in mind to play Malice but the woman that caught my eye. None other than, Martina Chen, a popular Instagram model and influencer. This woman possesses all the traits required to play the character but you can be the judge of that by visiting her Instagram profile: Look her up, Martina Chen.

Another personal motivation helped me pen the script and that is violence against woman and combining the issue with my love of history. Chinese folklore states that if a woman has suffered a lifetime of abuse or unjustly murdered by males, her ghost will come back from the grave to take revenge on those who have done her wrong. With this idea I am trying to send a message of violence against women is completely abhorrent and unacceptable. Never lay your hands on a woman or those actions will come back to haunt you.

My version of a nu gui is slightly altered. While nu gui do not harm women, this nu gui will manipulate woman into helping her torment her male victims. Remember this is a horror movie after all. This is why I chose to make Malice: Nui Gui as my first 45 minute short film with intention of making this a trilogy.
