Stylish Turkish science fiction film “Once Upon A Time In The Future: 2121”, directed by Serpil Altin, will be presented at the American Film Market by sales outfit EuroObscura.
Serpil Altin has achieved a historic milestone as the first female director from Turkey to direct a full-length feature in the science fiction genre. “Once Upon A Time In The Future: 2121” also stands as Turkey’s first sustainable movie. This visionary project, produced in Turkey by Altin and Korhan Ugur, boasts a talented cast featuring Selen Öztürk, Çagdas Onur Öztürk, and Ayseniil Samlioglu.
Set in a future in which the Earth has become uninhabitable due to climate change, people have resorted to living underground. A new authoritarian regime, controlled by the Young Generation, subjects citizens to constant surveillance. In this harsh reality, the impending arrival of a long-awaited baby disrupts the lives of a family living in one of the subterranean enclaves.
“Once Upon A Time In The Future: 2121” has embarked on a triumphant festival journey, collecting a remarkable array of accolades. Its trophy cabinet includes the Best Feature Award at the Brooklyn SciFi Film Festival, Best Sci-Fi Feature at London Sci-Fi and at the Phoenix International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival, Best Film at the Sydney Sci-Fi Film Festival, Best Feature at the Astrophobia Film Festival, Grand Prize at Scifian Festival in Korea: totalling over fifteen international awards won so far. In the not-too-distant future of the year 2121, the earth has become uninhabitable due to climate crises and famine. The few survivors have formed colonies and started to live in underground blocks. According to “The Scarcity Laws” of the hilariously zealous and dictatorial Young Administration that controls this complex and highly regulated system, old generations must be destroyed in exchange for new lives to keep the status quo of the population and their meager food stores in control. The life of a family that lives in one of the blocks is suddenly changed by the imminent arrival of a new baby they are expecting. On the surface a seemingly bleak tale that is surprisingly funny at times with a hopeful nod to the resilience of humankind.
