Brian Patrick Butler’s debut Friend of the World (2020), an experimental body horror comedy blending surrealism, dark humor, and post-apocalyptic paranoia, will have its 4K presentation on YouTube on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 1:00 PM PST / 4:00 PM EST. The 4K YouTube premiere coincides with the film’s sixth anniversary, following its premiere at the Oceanside International Film Festival on August 15, 2020.
Set in the aftermath of a catastrophic war, the 50-minute film follows a filmmaker who awakens inside a ravaged bunker and encounters an eccentric general who attempts to guide her through the ruins. Combining science fiction, body horror, dark comedy, and an intentionally unconventional visual style, Friend of the World explores isolation, paranoia, and the increasingly unstable boundary between reality and perception.
Written and directed by Butler, Friend of the World was produced by Charybdis Pictures and Gray Area Multimedia on a budget of approximately $3,000. Production took place in May 2017, with the majority of the film shot in the basement of the century-old C Street Inn in Downtown San Diego. The production’s contained setting and limited budget contributed to its distinctive visual approach, combining stark black-and-white imagery with experimental filmmaking techniques, practical effects, body horror, and dark comedy. The principal cast includes Nick Young as General Gore, Alexandra Slade as Diane, Michael C. Burgess as Berenger, and Kathryn Schott as Eva. Since its original release, Butler wrote and starred in the 89-minute satirical horror Hemet, or the Landlady Don’t Drink Tea, and also wrote and directed two upcoming features: the Halloween slasher rom-com A Corpse in Kensington with the late Michael Madsen and the psychological ballet thriller Fall of Giselle starring Kirsten Bloom Allen and Adam Daniel.
Friend of the World premiered online at the Oceanside International Film Festival on August 15, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequently became available through Tubi and Troma Now. Six years later, the film is returning in a new 4K presentation, giving audiences their first opportunity to watch the complete film free in 4K on YouTube. The YouTube Premiere begins Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 1:00 PM PST / 4:00 PM EST.
