Recently, we got an opportunity to speak with David Vorhees, author of the must read horror book ‘Brother’s Keeper.’ We talked about the horror to be found in it, his inspiration for the book, how he became a horror fan, and more. Please take a moment to check out everything he said below…
-PH: Thanks for sharing ‘Brother’s Keeper’ with us. Please tell us what it’s about?
-David: It’s about families, what they mean to us and how even when they are trying to protect, they can still betray.
-PH: You mentioned to us that the book deals with families. Why did you pick families as the connection between all of the stories?
-David: Those we love the most have the most power to hurt us. I like having my collections themed and the stories that were coming to me seemed to all have this thread running through them so I went with it.
-PH: And how will you turn these families lives up-side-down? What kind of horror can readers expect to find in these stories?
-David: The horror in these stories range from the supernatural to overprotective parents. Although the worst horrors on these stories come from the people and not the ghosts.
-PH: Is there any specific inspiration around certain stories?
-David: Most stories were inspired by pictures and conversations on social media. Sundown specifically was inspired by a rabbit hole I fell into on Twitter (back when it was Twitter) and an episode of Lovecraft Country.
-PH: If readers could only read one of these stories, which one would you want them to read and why?
-David: That’s an easy choice- Sundown. Sundown takes a huge issue and shows how bad we as humans can get of we don’t start viewing every human as just that a human being.
-PH: Any chance you turn one of these stories into its own book?
-David: Once again the answer is Sundown. That town, those characters could possibly have so much more to tell. The history could be easily expanded.
-PH: And for you personally, why horror? When did you begin to become a fan of horror, and did you ever think you would be writing horror one day?
-David: I have been a fan of horror since I was a kid. My mom and I would sit up late and watch old black and white horror comedies like Abbot & Costello meets the money, Red Skelton movies. My great aunt use to tell me ghost stories that she had experienced as a child and I couldn’t get enough of them. I guess I have always been drawn to the shadows.
-PH: Here’s your chance to promote anything we haven’t talked about. Let us know something more about ‘Brother’s Keeper,’ any previous or future books, or anything else you would like to mention.
-David: Brother’s Keeper is more than just horror it had some real drama in it as well. I would also like to tell you about Abigail’s Odyssey. Abigail is a 12 year old girl who goes walking into the woods behind her house. On this walk she finds a door, a door that transports her to another realm where a supernatural beast begins to hint her down. She has to discover why the beast is after her and why she keeps finding doors that take her to other realms.
Abigail’s Odyssey is a short novella, but I am writing a sequel to it called Abigail’s Wish.
We would like to thank David Vorhees for taking the time to answer our questions. Hopefully he gave you a good introduction to his new book ‘Brother’s Keeper,’ and intrigued you enough to picked up a copy. Again his book is available now on Amazon!
